Job Description of a Traffic Control Technician
A Traffic Control Technician deploys and removes traffic control devices, per MUTCD standards, to protect the public, and construction crews in the streets and highways. Traffic Control Technicians drive a large flatbed (barricade) truck that carries all required equipment. They often work in conjunction with other Technicians to accomplish large jobs such as big special event setup and closures.
Employees are expected to work weekends and mandatory workdays, as needed.
Basic Job Task
Traffic Control Technicians often work long and odd hours in a variety of weather conditions that include snow, rain and extreme heat or cold. There is a lot of lifting of heavy devices. Technicians will add and remove equipment from their trucks to the street and back again several times in a shift. They must be able to lift 50lbs or more multiple times. Technicians must also have the agility to; climb in & out of, and on & off of, the flatbed truck upwards of 100 times a day. Technicians must possess a good degree of stamina, as they will often walk miles in a single shift. At the same time, they must remain alert and keep safe around public traffic, while ensuring the safety of motorists, construction workers and themselves.
Skills for the Job
A Traffic Control Technician must be organized, analytical and attentive to what’s going on around them. They should have quick decision-making abilities for situations that can arise suddenly, and unexpectedly. They must work well alone and as a member of a group. They should possess strong communication skills in order to communicate with construction workers, dispatchers, and law enforcement officials. Technicians must be professional and courteous, even when dealing with agitated public, and or contractors.
